Book ReviewTitle Scandalous Liaisons Author Sylvia DayGenre RomanceRating Review So I don t normally read romance books but there are some exception namely anything written by Sylvia Day and the Black Dagger Brotherhood I remember reading the first three books in the Crossfire series years ago and I am planning to re read those and finish the series as well as reading most of Day s published works What I didn t know about Scandalous Liaisons before picking it up was that it is a bind up of three interconnected novellas so I will be reviewing and rating each story individually and the bind up as a whole Stolen Pleasures Stolen pleasures follows Sebastian Blake also known as the infamous pirate Captain Phoenix and Olivia Merrick and this was by far my favourite story in the bind up We meet Sebastian after he has stolen himself a bride but not in the way you think We meet Olivia Merrick was has been married by proxy to Sebastian who has raided a ship belonging to Olivia s father and kidnapped his supposed wife Initially the pair don t get on that well despite the sexual tension radiating between them but the banter between them is amazing as he tries to proves that he is her husband as well as a pirate but Olivia is much smarter than Sebastian gives her credit for in the beginning Initially he tries not to give into his passion for her as he has no desire to return to England his title or his family but this uickly fails when he realises that she wants him as much as he wants her so he plans to return her to England as his wife However he doesn t plan to stay only return occasionally Olivia meanwhile is fighting over whether she wants that ifestyle or a far attentive husband The sex scenes between these two are hot wild and filled with passion but there is much to the novella We The Price Of Blood (Phil Broker, learn that Sebastian has made an enemy of two vicious twin brothers who wanted Olivia as their compensation but Sebastian refused as he is protective of her not just as his wife but because he also cares for her Upon returning to England they fall into the roles of husband and wife but not before discovering that Olivia was meant to marry Sebastian s cousin resulting in a violent encounter between Sebastian and his father They also have prove to Olivia s father that their feelings for each other are genuine and that the rumours surrounding Sebastian aren t going to harm Olivia s reputation but it is tooate for their marriage to be annulled despite the fact that neither want thatThe night after their return Sebastian isn t sure he has made the right decision for Olivia and is going out to find a whore when she uses all of her charm to get him to vent his anger at his own cold and abusive father on her not violently but sexually This turns out to be the best sex they ve had yet and Olivia admits that she Russian Winter loves Sebastian and he knows he can t bear to be parted from her so he needs to settle his affairs at seaThat night heeaves Meg and the Mystery in Williamsburg (Meg Duncan, leaving her a note asking her to trust that he will return and it breaks Olivia s heart He does return monthsater but Olivia tries to close herself off from him because she is angry with him but this fails since she Pregnant Man loves Sebastian and he knows it Despite the seemingly forced nature of these scene it doesn t feel rapey at all as Olivia herself even admits that you can t rape the willing and she is than willing It takes some convincing but he manages to explain that heeft to deal with his ship and crew but also to take care of the twins that wanted her so badly He explains that he killed one but the other escaped and he immediately returned to her side to make sure she was safe and that he is never eaving again and will be with her as a husband should Olivia is still angry with him but does give in to his charms although she doesn t say I ove you even though he does for the first time During one trip the wife of a friend realises that Olivia is pregnant but she is uickly targeted by the escaped twin and held at gunpoint Sebastian tries to reason with him and can t so he shots Olivia but only injures her shoulder After they return home Olivia tells Sebastian that she is pregnant and we see their relationship return to normal with their banter sparking up again and we see Olivia s characteristic wit return but this pair got their happy ending Stolen pleasures was a delight to read and was a solid 5 starsLucien s Gamble The second novella is called Lucien s Gamble and it follows the couple who Sebastian and Olivia met towards the end of their novella Lord Lucien Remington and his wife Julienne however this is before their marriage Considering how happy they were in Stolen pleasures I am eager to see how they got there as Julienne mentions giving her husband 2 children which is how she recognises that Olivia is pregnant So we know that Julienne has got into Lucien s gentleman s club disguised very poorly as a man in order to find her brother Hugh Lucien is instantly struck by her beauty and wants her for his own but understand that she is a highborn ady and he is unworthy of her Julienne has always had to take care of her brother since the death of their parents when they were young this thrust Hugh into a role he wasn t prepared to take and he has developed a huge gambling habit which has put their family on the brink of financial ruin so Julienne knows she has to marry well in order to save them Lucien insists that she spends the night in the club despite how improper it is as he doesn t want anyone else figuring out who she is and why she is there but that night he creeps into her room only to watch her sleep as he has been obsessed with her for months but never dared approach her Julienne wakes up and we see the intense passion between this pair although they are held apart by their standing in society We earn that Julienne comes from a good family but Lucien is the bastard son for a Duke and a courtesan his parents The House Girl love each other very much and his father after giving his wife an heir never touched her again and he has a very good relationship with both of his parents which was very nice to see For a while they dance around each other but neither truly gives into the passion between them because they both know what is at stakeWhen Julienne beginsooking for a husband she begins courting a man named Fontaine and Lucien can t stand to The Accursed let her go He offers himself as a husband for Julienne but she refuses there is a resulting argument where Julienne is willing toet Fontaine sleep with other women but not Lucien and he can t figure out why he would be different There is one scene that made me uncomfortable it is at a ball during the Season where Lucien sees Julienne and Fontaine together and corners her forcing them to talk In this. Oh those naughty rakes With their wicked winks sensual smiles and bad boy habits you just can't take them out in polite society But who wants to go out when you can stay inStolen PleasuresSebastian Blake Earl of Merrick ong ago fled the responsibilities of his title to become the infamous pirate Captain Phoenix But the booty he's just captured on a merchant ship is a fierce tempered minx who claims to be a bride his bride married to him by proxy on behest of their fathers He could shame his hated family and return his beautiful wife untouched but no treasure has ever proved tempting to Sebastian and making their marria.

Scene he does eave bruises on her although he makes up for this ater when he weeps in her ap because he has hurt her It falls to his mother to explain that she doesn t Swing Sideways let his father sleep with other women because he knows she would kill him because sheoves him and he remains faithful to her because he The Secret of the Great Pyramid loves her in return Lucien realises that Julienne refused to marry him because sheoves him and couldn t stand to share him with anyone else unlike Fontaine who she would marry purely for his money Lucien decides to fight for the woman he Dancing with Mr. Darcy loves and ends up blackmailing her brother Hugh into helping him because of hisow birth status he isn t permitted to be anywhere near Julienne unless her brother approves it He agrees to wipe off part of Hugh s massive debt with him in return for allowing to court his sister and Hugh agrees During this time Julienne is courting both Fontaine and Lucien but she only has a desire for Lucien but it takes her a while to convince him that despite of his birth status that he is than worthy of being her husband and he takes a while to convince her that despite his past he will be a good and faithful husband working off the example his own father set for him Eventually she agrees to marry him and we see the run up to where they are in Stolen Pleasures While I really Lesca like Lucien s Gamble it wasn t as good as Stolen Pleasures for me but I still thoroughly enjoyed it Her Mad Grace DNFI didn t even read this novella as it is Hugh s story We meet Hugh in Lucien s Gamble as he is Julienne s brother but I had no desire to read his story as I didn tike him as a character at all Hugh in Lucien s Gamble is selfish childish and has no regard for the feelings of his family He is willing to marry his sister off into a Sharpes Trafalgar loveless marriage to settle his debts only to build them again he is willing to run away for monthseaving his sister and Aunt to deal with his creditors while he acts Punished like a spoilt child Despite any redemptions that might come in this novella I wasn t going to read it I was hoping for the story of Lucien s parents as that would have been enjoyable to read We know Lucien s father is a Duke married and has another son besides Lucien He has been with Lucien s mother for over 20 years and they have a son together They also work very well together even when his father has to attend engagements with his wife and I was wondering every time they appeared how the hell they got together and made it work through the years I would have preferred that story over Hugh s any day Overall rating for the three stories combined 3 starsStolen Pleasures 2 starsUnfortunately thisittle story suffered from Short Story Syndrome it had very His To Protect little depth was at times hard to follow and didn t really make a wholeot of sense Lucien s Gamble 4 starsI really enjoyed this gem of a short story It flowed well and had plenty of believable passion and steam This story played with all of my senses it felt very real to me as if I were in the story myself I did have a sense of deja vu while reading Lucien s Gamble I wondered if I had read it before or if it just had a similar story ine to another book I ve read who knowsHer Mad Grace 3 starsI iked this one well enough It had a Babys First Christmas (Christmas Is For Kids) (Christmas Is For Kids) (Harlequin American Romances, 754) little mystery to it which Iiked but when the answer was revealed it felt a Ups, Kita Sudah Menikah? little choppy to me I had to reread a few parts to understand what was being revealedOverall this was an enjoyable anthology and not a total waste of time I uite enjoy short stories and these were no exception Add in a pirate and some steamy action and you have me hookedDon t expectong complex character development but of you want a uick relaxing read this is is I found the second story Lucien s Gamble the best of the three I Catwoman like the strong independent heroine 3 short stories in one book the first bad boy being a pirate While the characters were fun withots of Baby Legacy (So Many Babies laugh outoud moments I found them way too modern and the women too usty ready for the time period I admit to skimming some of the over active bedroomor other places ove scenes stillthree fun steamy reads Enjoyable read I enjoyed the first two stories the most The third story was a Langlais correct pour les Nuls little odd but goodThis book contains the following three stories4 stars for STOLEN PLEASURES Sebastianeft home to be a pirate five years ago His father an earl made a marriage agreement for a cousin to pretend to be Sebastian and marry Olivia They married but Olivia has not yet met the cousin On her way to England by ship Sebastian takes over the ship carrying Olivia and Constantly Craving learns that she is married to his name Setting 1813 British West Indies and England4 stars for LUCIEN S GAMBLE Julienne goes to a gamblingprostitution place to find her brother The owner is Lucien a bastard but rich Lucien has many women in hisife Julienne and Lucien fall in ove but she fears he will always want other women so she refuses to marry him Setting 1810 London3 stars for HER MAD GRACE Hugh has carriage accident in a snow storm and must take shelter in home of Charlotte Charlotte married an old man in name only to be able to care for his granddaughter Charlotte and Hugh fall in ove She won t marry him because she fears he s not reliable and can t support her the granddaughter and the handicapped servants Setting 1814 Derbyshire EnglandSexual Aryan Idols language strongerotic Copyright 2006 Genre regency romanceFor aisting of my reviews of other Sylvia Day books see my 5 star review of The Stranger I Married posted on 11907 I didn t realise before picking Scandalous Liaisons up that it was actually three novellas in one There is a reason that I usually avoid novellas they cannot be as developed as a full ength novel and so something has gotta give The characters were good enough to read about and actually I really enjoyed the premise of the novellas but they just weren t as complex as I wanted and they didn t evolve very well Everything was ustlove at first sight There was no slow building of romance or the natural tumble into Bourdieus Secret Admirer in the Caucasus love Just head first down the stairs BANG BANG BANGove It just makes it all seem super unbelievable Essentially after the plot was established the novellas just turned into erotica without any other plot or depth pardon the expression to keep me interested I Something in Return like reading steamy scenes as much as the next person but it isn t the only reason that I pick up a book I still need development a solid and interesting plot and some proper emotionOverall if you just want uick erotic reads then this is seriously your book If you areooking for something then go find a full Byzantium length novel I wonder whether people were asusty and cock obsessed in the olden days as Sylv would have us believe One to ponder methinksThis was three short stories in one. Ge a true one in every sense is his one urgent desireLucien's GambleLucien Remington's reputation as a debauched ibertine who plays by no one's rules in business or the bedroom is well deserved He gets what he wants social repudiation be damned But society can keep from him the one thing he truly desires the untouchable Lady Julienne La Coeur Until she sneaks into his club dressed as a man and searching for her irresponsible brother Suddenly she's in Lucien's grasp his to take and his mind is filled with the most wickedly sinful thoughts A gentleman would walk away from the temptation she presents But then Lucien has

With some recurring characters They all followed a similar theme usually a reformed manwhore and in one story shockingly a woman finds true ove after much bodice ripping Really Notorious Pleasures (Maiden Lane, love how scandalised people are by horrors touching hands without gloves on and theike I d The Oracles Golem (The Oracle like to think I enjoyed aittle social history Measuring the Subjective Well-Being of Nations lesson along the way as well as all the bump and grind That s how I justified it to myself anywayWorth a read This is an Anthology but all three novellas are written b the same Author The first one takes place in 1813 the second in 1810 and the third in 1814 At the end of the first novella Stolen Pleasures we find out that Sebastian the Hero is friends with Remington the Hero from Lucien s Gamble the second novella Personally I think Lucien s Gamble should have come first but I m sure the Author had her reasons for doing things in the order she did The third novella is about Hugh the brother of Julienne the Heroine in Lucien s Gambleand Charlotte The Heroine in Stolen Pleasures is Olivia Stolen Pleasures Iiked this one although no one element really stands out Due to what would amount to underhanded trickery by his father the Hero Sebastian marries Olivia the Heroine but he doesn t know it Sebastian due to something that he believes to be his fault Let It Bree / Cant Buy Me Louie (Harlequin Duets, left home at the point the story starts I think it had been five years and became a Pirate known as Captain Phoenix He has the misfortune to capture the ship Olivia is on Olivia is on her way to England from the West Indies to meet her husband It doesn t takeong for her to The Solitary Self learn the truth nor does it takeong for the two of them to decide they are perfectly okay with the idea of being married to each other When they reach England we The Ornaments of Life learn better what his Dad had planned ateast I think we did I m not sure if Sebastian s cousin Carr was going to be Sebastian or if his Dad was I m pretty sure it was Carr but something Sebastian says to his Dad makes me think it could be the other case Anyway after the confrontation between father and son and some miscommunication between husband and wife they One Wish (Thunder Point, live HEA Lucien s Gamble As the older sister Julienne feels responsible for her brother Hugh even though he is old enough that she shouldn t have to be his gambling has placed a burden on she and her Aunt who raised them after their parents died when Hugh was 10 I don t recall it saying how old Olivia is or was but I got the impression she is older Of course Hugh is affected also but doesn t seem to care and actually I don t think he is aware of it Anyway Olivia dresses as a man to sneak into a club she believes her brother has gone to but it turns out that may just be her excuse She is fascinated by and attracted to Lucien Rembrandt the Hero the owner of the club It turns out the feeling is mutual and the passion between them according to Remington s mother can heat a room Iove reading books where the couple is brought together by fateestiny andr by overwhelming attraction and passion Stolen Pleasures was a factestiny and Lucien s Gamble is an attractionassion Okay maybe some curiosity thrown in there as well which is why Julienne went to the club and why Remington et her stay Her Mad Grace I finished this one earlier today and although what I had earned about Hugh in the previous story didn t Remembering and Repeating leave me with a page turning desire to read his story I did and I m glad Hugh has become a much better person in theast couple of years the time Leonardo and the Mona Lisa Story lapse between the two is 4 years Charlotte for reasons we doearn is pretending to be someone she is not After Mona Lisa learning her reasons along with the names and partial descriptions of her motley crew of servants I m hoping there is another book because to my way of thinking iteaves Fly Away Home (South Africa Series, loose ends and unanswered uestions Such as do they find the treasure that supposedly exists and what exactly is wrong with Katie that she can t carry the tea tray without massive clinking of the service Artemis is a true character not just inooks for starters he only has one eye that seems to bulge out of his head and he speaks his mind What happened to Artemis other eye it never says unless I missed it Tom and I think his name is Harry don t have the book handy also apparently have physical shortcomings that only detract from their Soldier O - Bosnian Inferno looks but not their abilities or personality The only other servant is Katie who I ve already mentioned There is one other person in the house besides the ones already named and that is Guinevere aka Gwen who is the illegitimate Granddaughter of the Duke who is deceased her father the current Duke wants nothing to do with her but havingearned about her years ago she s now 17 her Grandfather took her in and raised her This story turned out to be a really good page turner but due to the uestions I have I m hoping there is a seuel It would be nice to know what happens to Gwen after Finishing School among other things already mentioned My review contains spoilers and they re mostly my thoughts as I went with the book Rating based on 3 novellas by Sylvia Day Stolen Pleasures 375 stars Lucien s Gamble 3 stars and Her Mad Grace 25 stars Stolen Pleasures In this novella we met pirate captain Phoenix in the West Indies when he captures a ship and it s most beautiful occupant the daughter of the owner Olivia Now Sebastian who s the earl of Merrick in truth knows this is his bride whom he apparently married by proxy Olivia is vivacious and beautiful and Sebasti Since this book consisted of three separate but slightly intertwining stories I m going to review those separately Stolen Pleasures rated 35Despite the fact that the idea of being kidnapped by a roguishly handsome pirate in the Caribbean sounds really hot I found that I did not at all Seeing Through the Eyes of the Polish Revolution like the femaleead Olivia Rating was only thanks to the parts told from the POV of Sebastian BlakeCaptain Phoenix whom I really enjoyed Lucien s Gamble rated 45Lucien Remington has shown up in every single one of the books or at Keeping Secrets least his establishment has so I was very eager to meet him I was definitely not disappointed and Iiked Julienne the female A Ranchers Dangerous Affair lead of this story aot I think she reminded me a White Lace and Promises (Wild, Wicked And Wanton Book 2) lot of myself Her Mad Grace rated 45Definitely my favorite of the three stories and also the one that brought them all together with the only main character from the previous stories not to show up in person was Olivia thank God Main characters Hugh Julienne s brother and Charlotte were amazing and FINALLY A STORY THAT ISN T ABOUT A DARK HAIRED MAN AND A BLONDE WOMANSo in total that makes the average rating of this book 37 which I ve rounded up to a 4 Not theast Sylvia Day book I m planning to read but it is the The Sunshine Coast News last in this series which I now find rather unfortunate because Iiked the time it was set in. Ever claimed to be a gentlemanHer Mad GraceHugh La Coeur never wanted to be the Earl of Montrose Wine women and a hefty wager are preferable to responsibility of any kind It's certainly preferable to spending the night in an eerie neglected mansion owned by a egendary madwoman The duchess's companion the fiercely independent Charlotte is another matter altogether Hugh would be happy to spend as many nights in her bed as possible He knows she's hiding terrible secrets but for once in his ife Hugh has the desire to take on someone else's burden as his own no matter what the dangerThey're mad bad and totally irresistible.
