Thing like thatFor me it was a little too explicit not merely in terms f sex though that was extensive and inordinately detailed but likewise in violence and depictions f death There was also a brutal and detailed rape scene which I happened to be reading in school prompting me to angle the book away from anybody who might glance ver my shoulder while I attempted to skim past it as uickly as possible I don t doubt that this is a fairly accurate portrayal f Celtic society which had none f Porter Rockwell: A Biography our modern delicacy but it was enough to make me than a bit uncomfortable For sensitive readers I should warn that there is also fairly freuent bad language but these ARE warriors so what are you expectingIt was an interesting interpretationf familiar characters that was clearly well researched some Satire of the sources she references are texts I m using for my essay which pleased me but certainly not something I d passn to say my mother to read as it would horrify her no end I enjoyed the parts that weren t about sex a great deal than the steamy scenes which read a little like an incredibly crude biology textbook a mixture Deflower the Boss of anatomical precision and bad language I felt rather that I d just been through sex ed advanced edition and would ve preferred them to be brieferNevertheless they didn t stop me from enjoying the book as a whole and it s certainly a modern interpretation that I ll bear in mind as I begin transforming my notes into a full essay tomorrowwhich is totally not the reason I stayed up until midnight to finish thisr anything A decent enough adventure yarn for the reader who s prepared to suspend a lot Hebrew magic amulets of disbelief I felt it was spoiled by rather too many anachronisms eg rabbits and Norse place and personal names in the Iron Age Hebrides by the indiscriminate dumpingf modern anthropological parallels nto the past by projecting the bservations Being There of Julius Caesar Strabo Tacitus etcn the Continental Celts in different periods to apply to Scotland to say nothing هذه بلادنا: الجواء of the suggestion in the author s notef Iona as a centre Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom of druidismall a bitf a gallimaufry Irritating too is the gratuitous descriptions f sexual encounters Made me skip pages to get back to the real actionPersonal names are rendered phonetically this may be a help for folks who are unfamiliar with them but I felt that a pronunciation guide might have been useful And introducing a character by the name f Kaitlyn come n That goes iagainst i the phonetic spelling being itself derived from a mispronunciation f the Irish nameI think maybe I m just getting grumpy now for sword and sorcery fans OK but for those interested in closely researched historical fiction maybe not Enthralling and emotiveAfter reading Janet Paisley s White Rose Rebel I was eagerly awaiting her next novel Warrior Daughter than fulfilled my expectations It s a fascinating exciting story about Skaaha a real woman who lived Witness to the Martyrdom: John Taylor's Personal Account of the Last Days of the Prophet Joseph Smith on the Islef Skye during the Iron Age Contrary to the custom f the time Skaaha and her younger sister Eefay were raised by their natural mother the warrior ueen KerrigenSkaaha is 11 years ld when her mother dies and the foundation f her life is ripped apart With the new warrior ueen hostile to them the sisters have to leave all they are familiar with Skaaha rejects Eefay s suggestion that they both live with her father and become warriors choosing instead to go with her wn father and become a blacksmith Numerous difficulties follow but accompanied by her aunt Jiya and guided by the druid Ruan she eventually settles in makes friends and begins to build a new life It is a life that will no. O forge a life beyond the new ueen's reach But with rumour fear and danger sweeping the island she cannot remain unmoved Broken by brutal misfortune alone in a world f mistrust Skaaha must unearth the courage to confront her enemies in defence f her peopleIlluminated by the great Celtic fire festivals Warrior Daughter is inspired by the historical S cathach a fierce warrior woman f the first century AD and forerunner to the eually ferocious BoudiccaPraise for Janet Paisley's White Rose.
Well worth a read I enjoyed it and it is much better than the last ne I read by this author On my way to Skye in 2010 to visit the site f Sgathaich s alleged fortress I called in at Culloden Battlefield s visitor centre and found Warrior Daughter n the shelves I was stunned because as far as I m aware Sgathaich r Sc thach written as Skaaha in the book for bvious reasons has not been featured in any ther novels and she so deserved a story f her Ten Thousand Goddam Cattle: A History of the American Cowboy in Song, Story and Verse own On reading it I was further stunned by the authenticityf the writing and how Janet had thoroughly researched and imagined the mysterious matriarchal and druidic culture Set Theory, Logic and Their Limitations of the 1st century Following Skaaha from young girl to womanhood and all the rituals endured and battle skills developed was enthralling reading and not for the faint hearted I just love how after yearsf simply speculating what life must have been like in such times it was finally brought vividly to life by this very talented author and anyone who has an interest about Highland life n the cusp f the Roman invasion will undoubtedly treasure this workSgathaich features in Celtic mythology it s impossible to say whether she was a real woman even though the Isle f Skye could be a derivative f her name and she was the warrior ueen who taught martial arts to the mighty Irish mythological warrior C Chulainn With that in mind I sincerely hope that the author will write a seuel to the young Skahaa s story because to me it s The Stringbean Murders only Janet Paisley who can truly do her story justice I loved this book It s a very powerful engaging view into ancient Celtic culture and a great action story too The detailf a culture that really isn t well known is very good and I found it provoking to think about how their world worked in comparison to أساطير شعبية من قلب جزيرة العرب: الجزء الرابع ours today I loved reading about an ancient matriarchal society You can see the subtle shiftingf power within the book itself as men begin asserting their way This is a very well detailed book and Janet Paisley does not shy away from graphic description nor does she sensationalize it Be warned that there is a very disturbing rape scene which may trigger some people Everything is there for a reason though and this story is a powerful dynamic musing Stricken (Asphalt Cowboys, on the risef Skaaha daughter The Sporty Game of Kerrigan the Warrior ueen It s a comingf age book uite unlike any American Yakuza II other I have read I highly recommend it Warrior Daughter confirms Janet Paisley as a high calibre writerf historical fiction Backed with detailed research this life story Inventions That Changed the World: Working Wonders of an Iron Age warrior is excellent When her home is lost the girl Skaaha chooses a new productive life working with iron As she grows up ignorantf the danger stalking her that is also cruelly disrupted The perennial themes Love Onboard: Cupid's Caribbean Cruise of envy and vengeance make an engrossing exciting book set in a skillfully recreated Celtic culture Women in mythology and history particularly Celtic and Norse societies arene Vertical Mind: Psychological Approaches for Optimal Rock Climbing of my special interests Tomorrow I m due to be drafting a research paper about them that I ve been workingn So it s no surprise that I ve come across Scathach the mythological woman warrior Blood Love on which this novel is based even though I picked this up from the library unaware that it was about her I expected the book to end with her conflict against her sister Aifa here rendered as Eefay but that would have meant bringing Cuchulainn into it Instead it told an earlier storyIt was a refreshing break because in this novel the women are very much in charge It s a matriarchy inspired by the mother goddess and there s no conceptf just a girl anywhere within the text Too rarely do I get to read some. Inspired by first century AD warrior women Janet Paisley's Warrior Daughter is a gripping adventure about ne young woman's struggle to survive in the harsh Celtic wilderness2000 years ago n the Isle f Skye a warrior is bornDaughter f an Iron Age warrior ueen Skaaha is wild headstrong and revered But she is also a child and when a chariot race leaves the ueen dead and her menacing rival Mara in her place Skaaha's charmed life lies in ruinsVulnerable her future imperilled Skaaha seeks
T remain peaceful and undisturbed for longForeign raids begin to threaten the population robbers invade homes and n what should be a happy day when she comes f age Skaaha experiences a brutal attack followed by the realisation that she has a hidden enemy Her life changes again and that drives the story through several dramatic twists and turns to its gripping finaleSkaaha lived in a culture that is unfamiliar to us during a period f religious change Life was brutal but no so than nowadays Everyone had a contribution to make people were valued no ne went hungry r homeless Janet Paisley creates an authentic society intelligently constructed from the limited information available Her writing is thought provoking enthralling and emotive Warrior Daughter is a superb novel by a highly riginal author I can t wait for the follow up Set at the latter end DIY, Dammit!: A Practical Guide to Curse-Free Crafting of the Iron Age in the first centuryf the Modern era Warrior Daughter is about Kelts the Keltoi beautiful artistic poetic and ferocious especially the women These people are the progenitors f the Scotland we now know r at least nce knew Due to the fact they did not write their history but related their stories through ral bardic traditions much f ur knowledge f the Kelts is taken from what some would call mythological sources though notable Romans and Greeks did write about them However as a Scot who believes bardic tradition is a valid historical source this story reads with plausibility and is populated by three dimensional characters But then bvious from her author s notes Paisley has done much research into her characters a Warrior Daughter is the story Cutthroat of Skaaha daughterf the Celtic warrior ueen Kerrigan When Kerrigan dies unexpectedly in a chariot accident her rival Mara assumes leadership so Skaaha and her sister Eefay must leave the tribe Eefay goes to her father to train as a warrior while Skaaha chooses to train as a blacksmith with her An Eastern Orthodox Response to Evangelical Claims own father Skaaha begins a new life far from ueen Mara but not far enough the new warrior ueen s never ending jealousy sets in motion a tragic seriesf events that change the course The Claiming of the Shrew of Skaaha s lifeAccording to the author s note Skaaha lived during the Iron Age but there are no written recordsf her until almost 1000 years later Her story survived in Summoned oral legend And what a story Skaaha lived in a matriarchal society women were revered held positionsf power and were sexually uninhibited She was a fierce warrior who lived in a violent time her story is fast paced and at times brutalHaving known very little f this time period r the druidic culture I was unprepared for some graphic scenes in the book so be forewarned Warrior Daughter is not for the faint hearted reader Some readers will be ffended by the nudity sexuality andor violence in this book but I thought it was well researched and well written and I hope that Janet Paisley plans to write a seuel A beautifully written tale touching and ften heart breaking It is Baghdad, Mon Amour: A Journey of Exile and Return obvious that an awful lotf research went into writing this book and I appreciate that At times I think it was hard for me to put aside my preconceptions instilled in me by modern day social norms and s in particular concerning the vast number Dead Inside of sexual partners that everybody seemed to have Paisley did an excellent jobf bringing Celtic culture to life though she may have spent too much time n descriptions f their festivals and not enough The Taste of Spruce Gum on Skaaha Sc thach s evolution into the ferocious warrior ueen she became Despite this I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will certainly be passing itn to thers as a recommended titl.
